By Mrs Crawford-Smith (IB PYP Coordinator)
We are incredibly proud of Alice Fryer (Year 5), who dedicated time in the half-term break to selling Remembrance Day poppies in aid of the Royal British Legion. Alice is a keen member of her local Brownie group and is working towards her ‘Charities’ badge. It is fantastic to see Alice connecting with her local and wider communities in order to participate in such a worthwhile cause.
Poppies are worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community. The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it. The money raised from selling the poppies each year provides a wide range of support to the Armed Forces community, offering advice, employment, housing and mental health support.
Alice’s initiative reflects the core values of the IB Primary Years Programme, where we focus on nurturing pupils who are not only knowledgeable, but also compassionate and committed to making a positive difference in the world. Her efforts are a wonderful example of her self-efficacy and agency, qualities we encourage all our pupils to develop. By identifying a need, taking action, and working independently, Alice has shown what it means to be an active, responsible member of her community. We hope that Alice’s example will inspire other pupils to take independent action in their own ways.
Do encourage your daughter to share with us initiatives that she takes part in self-initiated or organised, so that we can celebrate the meaningful impact that our pupils are having in their communities.
