On Thursday 5th December, we invited some students from Goldington Academy to take part in a KS3 end-of-term debate competition. The topics were Christmas themed, with the first being ‘It’s wrong to tell children that Santa Claus exists’ and the second being ‘Christmas should be commercialised, despite other religious holidays existing.’
For a lot of our younger students, this was the first time they’d taken part in a proper debating competition. I was really impressed with their confidence and ability to think on their feet, and hopefully the experience they’ve had will encourage them to make the most of other debating opportunities here at school!
A particular well done to Jaya Ladher (Year 7) who won one of the ‘Best Speaker’ awards and to Izzy Macey-White (Year 8) who won an award for ‘Best Rebuttals.’ A big thank you also goes to Nawaal Qazi (Lower Sixth) and Naya Prabhu (Year 7) for volunteering their time and acting as chair and timekeeper for the event.
