By Mrs Thomas (Year 3 Teacher)

Last week, Year 3 embarked on a memorable and successful walk into our local community, diving into Bedford’s rich history and sparking curiosity about the lives of its significant figures.

We explored how individuals like John Bunyan, a celebrated writer and preacher; Etienne Stott, an Olympic gold medallist; Trevor Huddleston, a prominent anti-apartheid activist; and John Howard, a pioneer in prison reform, are remembered and celebrated. From plaques and statues to monuments and busts, we discovered how their contributions have been honoured over time.

This hands-on experience was an exciting way to connect with our Central Idea: Exploring the past shapes our understanding of the present and future. The walk not only brought local history to life but also prompted us to reflect on why and how certain individuals are remembered for their impact on the world.

This week, we’re continuing our learning journey back in the classroom. We’ll delve deeper into the achievements and legacies of a range of historical and modern figures and discuss what makes a person significant. What qualities do they share? How have their actions changed our lives or shaped the world around us? These thought-provoking questions will guide us as we consider how we can aspire to make a positive difference in our own community.

The students’ curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the walk were inspiring, it was a brilliant start to an exciting inquiry!
