Mrs Woolley (Biology Teacher)
On Thursday 15th June four Year 5 Scientists travelled over to Haileybury in Hertford Heath to take part in a STEM Challenge Day with 15 other Junior and Prep schools. The girls worked independently on space themed tasks set in five different areas; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Engineering.
They investigated which fuels were best to achieve the high temperatures to send a craft into space, created a meteorite by making truncated tetrahedrons, designed a filtration system to give the cleanest and greatest volume of water, programmed robots to complete tasks on the moon surface and created a structure to (very nearly) enable an egg to be dropped from 10 metres without breaking!
They also saw impressive Chemistry demonstrations and a Mars Rover prototype in action. The girls worked really well as a team and presented scientific thought and knowledge when coming up with ideas and problem solving. It was a great chance for our girls to see the application of science in different real world contexts and they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity.
