Sophia Knight and Harriet Diggle (Year 7)
On Friday 8th June, 50 Year 7 girls and 6 teachers embarked on an exciting trip to the Opal Coast (near Boulogne, Hauts de France), to practise their French language skills and to experience the culture and way of life.
On arrival, we had a tour of a French apple farm and saw how the farmer organically farmed the apples, blueberries, currants and other fruits. We then had the opportunity to make apple juice, using a traditional method. The tasting was called ‘une dégustation’, which involved sampling small portions of the apple juice.
On Saturday, we visited the beautiful seaside town of Le Touquet. The market was a hive of activity; we bought different kinds of fruit for our competition that night. We then visited Boulogne Old Town and answered some questions about the place. Later we enjoyed some free time in the new town.
In the evening, we assembled our creative fruit platters for the competition. The winners were Serena Parsons, Alice Parish and Amelia Rayner. On the final day, we stopped at Becasuc, which is known for traditional French sweets. We sampled many flavours, including pineapple, strawberry and violet.
On arriving at BGS on Sunday, we were pleased to take home our bottle of apple juice and sweets and other gifts we had bought for our families. We really enjoyed the whole experience and hope that future Year 7 girls will be able to go to France, too.
