Mr Wells (Director of Rowing)

On Saturday, the girls changed the water for land as they competed at the British Indoor Rowing Championships (BRIC) in the iconic Olympic Velodrome.

This competition is literally an engine-proving venue where no racing tactics or very little rowing technique are needed. However, it is a fantastic proving ground. The harshness of the competition separates the mentally strong and means you have to learn how to focus and keep your emotions in check.

The top four girl’s from each year group competed in the individual competition. Three senior (Years 11-Upper Sixth) groups competed together for the relay. The Sixth Form girls had to race over the championship distance of 2000m.  This is a brutal distance and if you ask any rower this is the test that all rowers fear, as it tests both your strength and endurance to the absolute limit. The Year 11 girls had to achieve the furthest distance possible in six minutes, Year 10 in five minutes and Year 9 in four minutes.

The Senior Girl of the Match went to captain Emily Baker (Upper Sixth) who produced a PB in the 2000m and then led her relay team to a strong top ten position. Junior Girl of the Match went to Sara Tassadaq (Year 10) who produced a fantastic race when it really counted.

Next term will see the rowing squads competing on Saturday 12th January 2019 (Year 9 only) and Weybridge Head on Saturday 19th January 2019 (Year 10-Upper Sixth).
