Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3)
Over the last two weeks, Year 3 have been introduced to fractions. To enable the girls to truly embed their understanding of this concept, it is important that they can explore many varieties of representations. Whilst the model of pizza and chocolate can support their visual understanding, it is the conjoined experience of objects, shapes and amounts that helps them identify that a whole is something other than one!
The girls had lots of fun using Numicon, arrays and bar models to explore their comprehension of denominators and numerators. They used visual representations to fathom fractions as decimals and thoroughly enjoyed using concrete materials to find fractions of amounts, during problem solving and reasoning activities.
It has been another enjoyable teaching unit as the girls continue to grow their confidence in Mathematics.
