Mrs Lovett (Head of Food and Nutrition)
The Year 8 Food and Nutrition students have been designing new dishes to put on the school menu, as part of the Green Kitchen dish project.
They carried out their own choice of research to find out information such as; what people want, why school meals are important and what they need to include to make it healthy. Some of them built on existing ideas, whilst others came up with completely new concepts.
We were extremely impressed with what they achieved in the time frame, producing a wide variety of outcomes. Mr Pickard, Chef Manager, commented that there were several ideas he could use! He selected Harriet Gates (8CLH) vegan bolognese as the winning dish. Plant based diets have received a lot of positive press recently; some of the girls are interested in how they can make more sustainable choices, with beef being identified as one of the least environmentally friendly food products. Well done, Harriet!
Harriet said: “I decided to make the vegan bolognese for the Green Kitchen dish competition because I feel that many people who are vegan or vegetarian have a limited range of food to have when they are eating school lunches. I decided to use my skills of making pasta, which I learnt in a previous Food and Nutrition lesson to help me design my dish. I also used my acquired knowledge of proteins, vitamins, minerals and vegetables to help create a healthy meal, which all students can enjoy.”
