Rising hockey star Maddie Axford (Year 11), was given the fantastic opportunity of captaining U16 England hockey team in a three game series last week at Lilleshall National Sports Centre versus Ireland.
On Wednesday 20th February, the U16s started with a 4-1 win in their first match, with Maddie scoring a goal off a short corner. The following day, in their second match, England won 3-0. On Friday, Maddie was asked to play for the England U18 girls who were also playing Ireland in a three match series. Unfortunately the U18 team lost 1-0 nil but this was an amazing achievement for the 15 year old to be asked to play for the England U18 team after her performances for the U16s.
Mr Mason-Mcleod (Head of Hockey) is full of praise for Maddie’s achievements, he said: “Maddie has worked extremely hard at her hockey over the last few years and this has been rewarded by the England U16 management team giving her the captaincy. She leads by example on and off the pitch and her energy levels are infectious. I was able to watch Maddie play on Thursday for the U16s and I can see why she was asked to play up and represent the U18s in a fully capped game, as her performance for the U16s was outstanding.”
Also on the hockey pitch, the first team played Framlingham in the last 16 of the England Hockey Tier 1 cup competition at Cardington Road. After fantastic performances against Kimbolton, Rugby and Oundle Schools, the team were hoping for another victory against another very strong hockey team. Unfortunately, the first team lost 3-0 but put in a superb performance on the pitch.
