Junior School Tennis

Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE)

On Saturday, our Years 5 and 6 girls competed in their first tennis matches of the season against Kimbolton School. It was a typical British summer’s day with non-stop rain; however, the quality of tennis was certainly not dampened.

The tennis was split into two different formats across the morning; doubles game play for the Year 6s and a few of the Year 5s that joined the Year 6 team, and then singles tie breaks for the other Year 5s and all the Year 4s.

The doubles matches were extremely competitive, the girls demonstrated teamwork and athleticism across the court. BGS went on to win a total of 114 games to Kimbolton’s 32, giving a convincing overall win to BGS. Special mentions to Alice Challacombe (Year 6), Esme Challacombe (Year 6), Zara Gulati (Year 6) and Kate Woodward (Year 6) who only lost three games across all their matches.

The tiebreak singles were just as thrilling. We opted for a timed format that maximises the amount of tennis played and ensured all make plenty of progress. Jemima Dean (Year 5), Avanni Katechia (Year 4) and Erin Lincoln (Year 4) won all their matches. Final overall score for Year 5s was 45 games to BGS and 16 games to Kimbolton School. A convincing performance but perhaps more importantly all matches were played in a friendly and supportive spirit.
