Senior School Tennis

Mrs Axford (Director of Sport)

The senior tennis season opened with pre-season training the day before the start of term in preparation for a full fixture against Kimbolton School on Saturday 27th April. Unfortunately the British weather was not playing ‘ball’ with the arrival of storm Hannah and gale force winds forcing cancellation much to the disappointment of all those selected.

The first Saturday fixture took place on Saturday 11th May at the courts at Gordon Fields against St Albans High School. All BGS A and B teams from U12 to U15 were victorious and it was fantastic to see girls attacking the net and playing very positive and assertive tennis.

Last Saturday, BGS competed against The Leys. With many of our Years 11 and Upper Sixth tennis players revising for a busy week of exams, Jossy Young (Year 10) and Poppy Whitford (Year 5) led the way for BGS as 1st pair for BGS against strong opposition from The Leys. Natasha Cooke (Upper Sixth) and Cecilia Castell (Upper Sixth) played as second pair and Ella Craven (Year 10) and Elizabeth Bruce (Year 10) stepped up from the U15s to play their first matches for the 1st team. Despite a valiant effort, the Leys proved too strong but all the BGS players enjoyed their first experience of playing on grass.

Scarlett Ames (Year 10) and Emily Fordham (Year 10) were unbeaten in the 2nd team, and Lara Parsons (Year 10) and Georgie Wright (Year 10), Natasha Pennington (Year 9) and Rebecca Turner (Year 9) and Ruby Adams (Year 9) and Molly Rea (Year 9) all had some excellent results playing for the U15s. Unfortunately, even their best efforts could not stop a strong Leys squad from dominating the results.

Both the U14 A and B BGS teams won their matches and a special mention to Grace Hughes (Year 9) and Kierra Saloma (Year 9) who are playing their first season of tennis matches for BGS.

We look forward to a plethora of tennis fixtures for all standards and experience, across all age groups after half term, culminating with the BGS tennis championships on Saturday 29th June.
