Mr Jeffryes (Mathematics Teacher)

BGS once again produced fantastic results in the Junior Maths Challenge (JMC), which is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and supported by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. It is aimed at those in Years 7 and 8 and is sat in schools.

A sample question for this year's Maths Challenge:

There are 120 000 red squirrels living in Scotland.  This represents 75% of their total UK population.  How many more red squirrels live in Scotland than live in the remainder of the UK?

A 30 000   B 40 000  C 60 000   D 80 000   E 90 000

Over 260,000 pupils across the UK sat the JMC with the top 6% receiving a gold, 13% receiving a silver and 21% bronze. In Year 8, four girls received gold, eight silver and sixteen bronze. Hanifah Miah, Alexandra Gentry, Gabriela Woodroffe-Gomez and Charlotte Sawford received gold certificates. For Year 7, Eva Ng and Amelia Jones received gold certificates, five girls got silver and ten got bronze. All six girls should be congratulated on a tremendous effort.

Hanifah, Alexandra, Eva and Amelia are all through to the next 'Kangaroo' round which is to be sat on Tuesday 11th June.
