Many congratulations to GB Junior Academy cyclist Sophie Lewis (Lower Sixth), who claimed 5th place and Top Junior position at the Women’s CiCLE Classic in Melton on Sunday.
Representing Cycle Team OnForm, Sophie lined up against 120 riders under sunlit skies, boding well after the heavy rain of the previous two days. However, within 500 metres of the start, a major crash involving almost 40 riders brought the race to an unexpected halt.
Sophie adds: “This was a really hard race, racing against the top women in the country over a 108km circuit (which was shortened to 81km after a delay from a crash 3km in), which consisted of multiple off road sectors through muddy farm yards and gravel tracks.
“Having waited an hour and a half, the race finally got underway and was full gas until the finish. The off road sectors made the race really exciting and fun, even in the pouring rain and I was really pleased to get 5th at the end in the bunch sprint.”
Sophie is currently part of the Great British Cycling Team Junior Academy Programme. The programme is focused on developing the country’s best junior riders, ensuring that they are ready for life as full-time athletes.
