Mrs McPhail (Geography Teacher)

Sunday morning saw the departure of all Year 10 geographers to Sheringham in North Norfolk.

The purpose was to undertake fieldwork, preparing the girls for their GCSE exam, whilst also developing their investigatory and data collecting skills.

On arrival at the YHA, we headed to the beach and found some shade beneath the sea wall to have our first classroom session of the day. Once briefed, girls went off in groups to assess the environmental quality of 27 different sites within the central region of Sheringham and completed traffic counts. Since our last visit, a sink hole had appeared in the main high street adding an interesting angle to our data collection!

In the evening, the girls began to write up their methodology and presented their data via a variety of graphs. After a long day in the ‘field’ they had achieved a lot.

Monday saw groups of girls look at how Sheringham’s coast has been managed and the impact of longshore drift was measured. We were lucky to have a warm day so the occasional ice cream was a welcome treat!

On Tuesday, we arrived at Wells- next- the- Sea and walked to Holkham to look at the sand dunes, experiencing the UKs extreme weather conditions on the way!

Eloise Cawood throughly enjoyed the experience, she said: “The Sheringham field trip was great fun, we all thought it was very interesting to see our classroom work brought to life. It was fascinating to see how the weather can change in a short space of time, which helped us with our extreme weather topic.”
