The BGS Tennis championships took place in the blistering heat last Saturday. Fortunately, for the younger players, they were on court first at 8.30am.
65 girls from Years 3 to Years 7 took part in the U10 and U12 competition and started in boxes playing mini round robin competitions against everyone in their box. The top 16 players then qualified for the knock- out stages.
In the U10 competition, Nivashini Thayaparan played Florence Sibbald in one semi-final and Georgia Ingram-Moore played Avaani Katechia in the other. The two finalists were Nivashini and Avaani, and after a very close three set tiebreak, Nivashini was victorious claiming the BGS U10 Tennis Championship title for 2019.
In the U12 competition, Poppy Whitford beat Molly Linclon in one semi- final with Milly James proving just too consistent for Lucy Nixon in the other semi-final. Poppy Whitford then went on to snatch victory against Milly James in the final to become BGS U12 champion.
The U14 and U16 players also played their round robin matches before extreme heat stopped play. Their knock out matches are being played before the end of term, so news of these two age groups will follow later.
Congratulations to everyone who played. Many players have represented school numerous times this summer, but for some it was their first experience of tournament play. A big thank you also to all our older helpers on the day.
