Mrs Childs (Head of Year 6)

On Friday 18th October, 6NC and 6PA welcomed their parents into the classroom to celebrate their learning based on the central idea Through the arts, people use different forms of expression to share their uniqueness. The morning provided opportunity for the girls to show and discuss the thinking and learning evident in the classroom. The girls planned some of their favourite learning experiences and guided their parents through activities, giving them positive encouragement and enjoying the opportunity to be the experts.

Throughout the Unit of Inquiry, the girls have developed more global awareness and have been particularly interested in the social, political and environmental messages given through the artwork of Paweł Kuczyński and Banksy, comparing and contrasting the styles and messages. The girls then created their piece of art, inspired by some of the art periods researched and have thought carefully about the message they wanted to give to the viewer. Poppy Clarke, Ava Mead and Megan Robertson reflect on their inspirations:

Poppy Clarke: “My piece is inspired by Pawel Kuczyński because his artwork is clever and gives a clear message. The message in my work is air pollution and not having global awareness. The girl in my picture is on her phone and does not see the devastation caused outside her umbrella. I chose to do her in bright colours to show she has not realised that anything has changed so is not taking action. Air pollution is important to me because I do not want to live in a world where it is hard to breathe.”

Ava Mead: “My art is all about polar bears and how they are dying out. I am obsessed with all animals and I really want to help them. I wanted the message in my piece to be strong so I have a polar bear looking at a gravestone. Engraved on it are the words My kind.”

Megan Robertson: “My artwork is all about climate change. I chose to do red background because this is the first colour when you think of fire. The world is overheating and fire is very hot. The black splodges was an idea taken from graffiti and the world being separated. The blue swirls represent the massive patches of garbage in the ocean. My piece is called There’s no Planet 2.”
