On Thursday 21st November, four Sixth Formers participated in the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge ((STMC) at Abbey School, Northampton.

The STMC provides enrichment and challenge to teams of senior students in the UK. The competition tests students in Years 11 and Sixth Form on their mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, with teams of four competing over several rounds to reach the final.

There were three rounds - a group round, a cross number and a shuttle round - each increasing in difficulty, which tested a range of maths skills. Our personal favourite was the cross number while the shuttle round proved a challenge. Overall, the day was extremely enjoyable, and our supervisor commented on how well we worked as a team and how well we represented the school.

Mrs Gardner (Mathematics Teacher), said: “The girls embraced the competition and showed great team work. They have developed key mathematical and communication skills by having to look for quick methods to solve questions using only pen and paper.”

Senior Mathematics Challenge team: Esha Rashid and Erin Knight (Upper Sixth). Karissa Singh and Ava Orman-Wheeler (Lower Sixth).

In other Mathematics news, well done to the following budding Mathematicians who have made it onto the Achievement Wall in the Mathematics Department: view the names here.

The initiative introduced by the Mathematics Department in 2016, is updated each term and recognises those girls who have made excellent progress by being resilient, problem solvers and going that extra mile to develop their Mathematical skills.
