Miss Bruce (Director of Rowing)
On Sunday 12th January, BGS competed in their first Head race of 2020, the Star Club’s New Year Head. After a frustrating Autumn Term full of race cancellations, each squad got the chance to put all their hard work into practice and race the 2000m course.
A blustery day gave our rowers some challenging conditions in which to perform but they didn’t let it phase them. Showing good teamwork, the Senior 8+ came together and put in a good run down the course, achieving the third fastest women’s time of the day. Later in the day, the seniors competed in their quads, fours and doubles, showing off their sculling skills.
Our Year 11 girls all competed in their quads in which they have been practising. Focusing on technique and boat speed really shone through their racing on Sunday. Continuing to show improvements, especially during their exams, has been brilliant.
Up against a big category with tough competition, the Year 10 quads were ready to execute their race plans. Coming away with 2nd, 3rd and 7th place, the girls were pleased with their row.
This was the Year 9 girls first ever race and a chance for us to gather some data. Needless to say, we were so impressed with not only their row but their professionalism out on the water. All three of the octos and the quad showed competitiveness, good timing and confidence.
Everyone competing gave gutsy performances. With a number of second places and good times, the girls are determined to continue to train hard and climb up the results table. Congratulations to the Senior double, Year 11 coxed quad and the Year 9 octo who all won their respective categories.
It was lovely to see so many supporters along the riverbank on Sunday. Hearing the roar from our marquee really does make all the difference.
