Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE)

It’s been an incredibly busy start to the 2020 cross country season, with our athletes producing stellar individual and team performances across all age groups.

On Tuesday 14th January, the runners took to the fast and undulating trails of the Bedfordia Cross Country event at Lincroft Academy. This was the first run of the season and a good test for all the girls, who were competing against schools from as far afield as Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire.

The competition was split into races for Years 5 and 6, Year 7 and Year 8, with teams of eight entered to represent each year group. With 30 schools competing in each race, the BGS Years 5 and 6 team finished fourth – but second out of the North Bedfordshire District schools. The Year 7 girls also did well to finish second overall and first for the district, while Year 8 were second and second respectively. This resulted in BGS finishing first overall across all girls’ teams.

The excellent form continued at the Partnership Cross Country event on Tuesday 14th January at Priory Country Park. Competing for the North Bedfordshire District title, the runners had to tackle a very wet and muddy course. BGS produced a fantastic team performance, claiming first overall across all girls’ teams. The Years 5 and 6 team finished second, followed by first place finishes for the Year 7 and 8 teams. A special mention to Rosie Foster-Glennon (Year 8) claimed a gold medal, Jessica Parrish (Year 7) a silver medal and Poppy Whitford (Year 6) a bronze medal.  Again, as a school BGS were winners of the overall Girls Event retaining the much sought after District Title.
