The Model United Nations conference on Saturday saw our students join over 350 other pupils from around the world at this event organised by the University of Cambridge. Despite some technical difficulties at the start, the opening ceremony was eventually accessed by all and included a specially recorded message for the conference from Ban Ki-moon (UN director 2007-16).

The girls then debated with over 60 other students, learning as they went along from the chair and co-chairs, all the procedures and etiquette of a conference. The preparation that had gone into the day meant that all the girls were able to follow the debate and most contributed either with speeches or by asking questions ‘raising a point of information’. By the end of the afternoon, the Google Chat we had used all day was alive with views on other countries’ stances and the unfairness of the chair’s choice of speakers! The engagement was amazing to see and I was very impressed by the support shown for each other when they got the opportunity to speak.

At the end of a long day, it was particularly pleasing to see that some stayed on for the optional workshops, one of which was an insightful presentation on public speaking.

Congratulations to Aisha (Upper Sixth), Sabira (Upper Sixth), Karissa (Upper Sixth), Kyra (Upper Sixth) and Jemma (Year 10).
