It has been lovely seeing all squads getting back into their school routines along with their after school and weekend rowing sessions. All the girls have thoroughly enjoyed being back in a boat with their teammates. They have been refocusing on their technical paddling and slowly building their fitness back up whilst the weather has been nice.

Our newly appointed Captain, Ava Orman-Wheeler and Vice Captain, Lizzie Huckett have already made a huge impact and are raring to make this year a positive and fun one for the rest of the boat club. Read their reflections below.

Ava Orman-Wheeler (Captain, Upper Sixth)

“I have tried every sport possible, from netball, lacrosse, hockey, rounders, swimming… BGS has it all. However, people who know me will know none of those aspirations particular worked out for me, until I found rowing. Rowing is a sport like no other. It definitely comes with its highs and lows but the skills and friends you gain from it is incredible, plus that feeling when you have crossed the finish line with the sound of cheers all around you is something you will never forget.

“I cannot wait to truly dive back into this sport for my final year and take up the role of Captain of Boats. Lizzie and I both aim to create a larger rowing community, making this unique sport wider known within and outside the BGS population. However, we also want to ensure girls who do choose to row gain more confidence and resilience within themselves to achieve their goals, whatever it may be, because I believe with the right mental attitude anyone can achieve anything.”

Lizzie Huckett (Vice Captain, Upper Sixth)

“Rowing is an intense yet rewarding sport. Having rowed for almost 5 years, I have had my fair share of ups and downs with the sport. However, the ups are some of the most memorable moments of my school career. The tougher experiences have taught me resilience and have shown me that these difficult sessions will lead to winning races!

“Being Vice Captain of boats is a privilege and I can’t wait to implement some of the ideas Ava and I have for developing BGS rowing and making the sport a bigger part of BGS. We can’t wait to get to know the younger girls and ensure they have a rewarding and enjoyable time.
