Senior School Hockey

Many congratulations to the BGS hockey stars, who have been selected for the Bedfordshire Academy Centre 2020/21 and the England Hockey pathway programme, following recent trials.

Amelia Barrow Jones (Year 10) and Jossy Young (Lower Sixth) have been selected for the U17 England Hockey Performance Centre (Northwood). Amelia was in U15 Performance Centre last year but now is too old and has re-trialed with success for the U17 age group. Jossy has shown superb progression and perseverance having last year been turned down for a Performance Centre place. She has continued to work hard throughout the past year and was rewarded with a place this time. Both girls are playing a large amount of club hockey to supplement school training and this has clearly help their progression. View a photo of Amelia and Jossy here

We are also very proud of the 29 BGS players that have been selected for the Bedfordshire Academy Centre. This is the first stage on the England Hockey Player Pathway and is offered across 49 Counties in England. It is the step before those aspiring to be selected for England Performance Centre.

Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE) said: “Congratulations to all who achieved a squad place this year. To those unsuccessful on this occasion I would encourage them to persevere with their hockey and try again next year. For many of the girls, they will be experiencing the pride of representing Bedfordshire for the first time, whilst for others this will be a further chance to play for the county and enhance their skills. It is lovely to see so many girls playing hockey beyond the school environment with the desire to be the best they can. County hockey is just one of the possible avenues to gain extra exposure, local club hockey is the other main way and one that we as a school really try to encourage.”
