Mrs McKinell (Music Teacher)

Throughout the year, the Music Department will be putting together a series of live streamed concerts, which will shine the spotlight on the different types of instrument/voice, and highlight some of the work our exam classes are exploring. We launched the series with An Evening with Keyboard, which took place on Wednesday evening.

Eight girls took part, from Years 7 up to the Upper Sixth, each making a video recording of themselves performing a piece on the piano, either at school or at home. The girls’ independence in facilitating this was fantastic; a learning trait which they had further developing during remote learning at the end of last academic year. It was excellent to see a range of genres being performed, from 20th Century impressionist composers like Grieg and Debussy through to Jazz and Pop composers, such as George Nevada. The girls displayed incredible depth and maturity in their playing.

Part of the joy of learning an instrument , as well as providing respite from a busy day, is that it allows the girls to express themselves through their instrument, exploring new genres and techniques. In addition to honing musical skills, these processes provide ample opportunities to develop transferrable skills which can be applied to other subjects and areas of academic learning, as evidenced both by numerous studies and our own experience within BGS.

The talent on display was wonderful to see and the quality of performances very impressive. If you missed the live stream, you can watch it here.

Do keep an eye out for forthcoming remote events from the Music Department, which will include An Evening with GCSE Music on Thursday 8th October and our Junior Teatime Concert on Tuesday 13th October.
