Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)

This week, Year 5 have been demonstrating their independent inquiry skills in their Science investigations, whilst looking into practical experiments focused around exploration and discovery. From finding out more about the properties of ‘Oobleck’ and why it is possible to walk on swimming pools of custard (unfortunately, we weren’t able to try this specific investigation out for ourselves!) to finding solutions to practical problems that explorers may face on their expeditions.

Through trial and error, the girls were able to find ways to make muddy water safe for explorers to drink. In another challenge, the girls were tasked with making seawater safe to drink by finding ways to separate salt from water. The girls have enjoyed finding answers to real-life situations faced by explorers from the past and present.

Poppy said: “The experiments are always fun because we can find out how things work for ourselves rather than just reading about it.”

Amelia said: “You always come away having learnt about something completely new.”

Flora and Lizzie said: “Science is good because it’s fun but you learn a lot.”

Allegra said: “You get to use different materials and equipment and it’s good fun being able to do the experiments ourselves.”
