Throughout the pandemic, we have been highlighting how our incredible alumnae have had to adapt to the current challenges. This week we are focusing on BGS alumna, Clementine McIntosh (2017).
Following school, Clementine studied Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Birmingham, graduating last summer. Due to the pandemic, Clementine has been unable to go straight into this career path and has taken up a fundraising role at a new educational charity, Learning By Heart.
Learning by Heart provides an affordable tutoring service for GCSE and A-Level students, who contribute what they can afford for using the service. The amenity has been a valuable lifeline for many students, affected by the pandemic, requiring extra help with their studies. The profits from Learning By Heart go to help fund the work of pan-African charity, CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education), which works to widen access to girls’ education in the Sub-Saharan nations. The pioneering work of Learning By Heart has been recognised nationally and they were a finalist in the Learning Excellence Awards 2021.
Clementine’s fundraising role is concentrating on establishing Learning By Heart further and covering the associated costs of on-line resources, website running costs and safeguarding checks and training. As part of her fundraising efforts, Clementine set up a virtual event in February for Sixth Form students, which was also viewed by BGS Sixth Formers. The event was hosted by Clementine, along with guest students from a number of top universities, answering questions about making your final university selections, how to navigate offers and student finances, how to prepare for September and specific questions about each university. The event was very well received and provided a greater insight into Higher Education for the attendees.
