Over the last few weeks the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) has invited students to participate in the CILIP Carnegie Book Shadowers Club, a yearly event that asks young people to review and vote on their favourite title from a collection of shortlisted children’s titles chosen by librarians across the country. Students are asked to write a short review, and vote for their favourite.
We have had a really positive response to the BGS Book Shadowers Club with several students taking part across the year groups. Jemma Oldroyd (Year 10) has read several of the titles and has written the following reflection:
“Taking part in the Carnegie Clip Shadowing Scheme has been hugely enjoyable for me. As an avid reader, I will take any opportunity I can get to challenge my ability and explore new topics. Although at the moment, end of year exams are approaching and I may be a bit short on time, it is nice to have a break every once in a while and just do some solid reading. The books selected have great variety and interesting elements behind them.
“I love that I get the opportunity to review each book and can vote for my favourite one. This, I feel, helps me better reflect on my overall judgment of each individual story and allows me to understand what I find valuable to learn from it. Overall, the scheme is hugely beneficial, because it not only expands your knowledge but also makes you think about what is important to you.
“Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate the support of Ms Rogers, who organised the scheme. Throughout my reading and reviewing, she has consistently given me positive feedback and been extremely efficient whenever I have a request or want to return a book. It is so much nicer to take part in something when the person who has organised it is genuinely interested in the participants’ opinions and views.”
If your daughter hasn’t managed to take part in this year’s Book Shadowers Club, all of the titles are still available to borrow. E-mail [email protected] for book request and reservations. We will be revealing the winner of the CILIP Carnegie Medal and Shadows Scheme readers’ choice award in the very near future.
