Mr Jeffryes (Mathematics Teacher)

Cast your minds back to early April and this year the Junior Mathematical Challenge was a little different as, for the first time, everyone in Year 7 had the chance to ‘meet the challenge’ as well as sets 1 and 2 in Year 8.

As a reminder, the challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems with no calculator allowed! The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think and are not about lucky guessing. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

To give you an idea of one of the questions from this year’s online paper…

‘When I have walked 20% of the way to school, I have 1200 metres more to walk than when I have 20% of the walk remaining.  How far, in metres, is it from my home to my school?

A  1240     B 1440      C 1680      D 1800       E 2000

Do you think you have worked it out right?

Once again, the results for the Year 7 and 8 students who took part were strong with one gold, five silver and 15 bronze certificates from Year 7 and two gold, eight silver and four bronze from Year 8. The students will get the certificates from their teachers soon.

Special congratulations go to Niya Nair and Mitali Misra (Year 8) for gaining their Gold Awards and to Mahdiyah Meghji who got a Gold Award and Best in School (when in Year 7). Fantastic achievements!

Good news that the follow on ‘Kangaroo’ round can take place online this year. Good luck to Mahdiyah, Niya and Mitali who all qualified to take part.
