Our staff and students are delighted to see the return of the competitive sports fixtures. We hope you enjoy reading the following reports.
U12 Hockey Tournament at Bedford Modern School
Mrs Jackson and Miss Bentley (PE Teachers)
The U12 A and B teams headed out on Saturday for their first competitive fixture since February 2020 both excited and nervous.
Playing in a round robin tournament against Kimbolton, Wellingborough, Stephen Perse and BMS, both teams started brightly, scoring early goals. There were penalty shuffles instead of penalty corners and many of the girls showed great composure when stepping up to take these. Overall, the A team won two games, drew one and lost one and the B team won one game, drew two and lost one. A superb performance by both teams to start the hockey season. Well done to everyone!
Berko 10s Tournament
Mrs Lombaard (PE Teacher)
The Berko 10s Tournament was a fantastic event to start off the term for our BGS lacrosse players. For many, this was the first-time players were able to compete outside their year group and school.
For the B pool, BGS had a total of six matches lasting 20 minutes, which meant a lot of playing time for our squad members. While this was a preseason tournament with no scores officially recorded, the BGS B squad won all their matches convincingly against St Catherine’s, Berkhamsted, North London Collegiate, Abbots Hill and St Albans while just falling short to St Goerge’s in the fifth round 2-4.
There was dynamic defensive play by the likes of Emily Fordham, Isabel Baker, Fifi Devile (Team Most Valuable Player). The midfield kept fantastic consistency in a very difficult position in lacrosse and this included Emmie-Rose Stephens, Faith Adeyemi-Abere, Avneet Dhaliwal, Jelly Devile. We had some fantastic goals and assists in our attacking end by Ella Jemett-Gabrys, Ella Matthews, Alice Terry, Amelia Barrow-Jones and Olivia O’Dell. Last but not least, a big mention to our goalkeeper, Maisie Robson, for some amazing saves and holding down our defensive end.
The A pool BGS team were up against tough competition, but the team was up for the challenge. There were a mix of players from all years stepping onto the pitch together for the first time. While our games were not the score lines we would have hoped for, each game played was filled with grit and improvement. The best games played were against Lady Elenor Holles and Wycombe Abbey, keeping the score lines tight. The defense was the star of the show, disrupting teams with their assertive style and Kierra Saloma making big saves while Sophia Gallagher intercepted numerous passes. In attack Ellie Castell Scored her first goal on the senior squad. Mya Lakhan dominated in the midfield and Sophie Forbes-Laird sped past opponents like the flash.
We can’t wait to see the progress these teams will make this year and what a great way to start the lacrosse season, here at BGS!
