Miss Bream (Dance Teacher and Coordinator of Co-Curricular Dance)
The joy of Dance was clearly evident and truly embraced last week when over 160 students from Years 3 to Upper Sixth performed in our first live performance in three years. Students worked for two full, fun filled days to prepare for the performances.
All Kinds of Legends represented our interpretations of a broad range of legendary singers, songwriters, choreographers, artists, events and politicians. With syllabus work on hold last term, to prepare for this performance our students gained a wealth of experience to learn complex, collaborative pieces of choreography.
As well as perseverance to master dance techniques, this process demanded patience, respect, motivation and determination; these transferable life skills will live with our students forever as they themselves evolve to be legends in their own right. Both staff and students will look back on this event with fond, happy memories.
Mrs Howe (Director of Drama and Dance) said: “Alvin Ailey, the visionary African-American choreographer, once said: ‘Dance is for everybody. I believe that Dance came from the people and it should always be delivered back to the people.’ This was in true evidence during the recent Dance shows, which showcased BGS’ fully inclusive co-curricular dance provision where dance is open and accessible to all students regardless of past experience. It was such a pleasure to watch the delight with which so many of these young dancers presented their personal dance journeys, exploring how to fuse technical skill into the expression of emotion and narrative as so aptly choreographed by their very talented teachers. My thanks to everyone who was involved in putting on the show for creating a truly enjoyable evening of Dance that transported us so beautifully for those few hours.”
