This week, has been a hive of activity as we kicked off our 10 Year celebrations with our Heritage Week

BGS Marketing Intern and 2017 alumna, Miss Laura English reflected on her experience of organising a week of celebrations:

“BGS has created an educational platform, and community enabling students to mature and flourish. The School has not only supported me within my academic studies as a student, it has assisted in my journey towards a marketing career. Having spent five years away from the school before returning as an Intern, I was shocked to see the advancements BGS had made in such a short period of time. Then, whilst deep diving through our archives and looking at our heritage schools’ memorabilia, I realised the innovative approach both BGS and its heritage school have made in girls' education across the last 140 years.

“Over the past few months, I have spent my time designing and coordinating a Heritage Week focused on celebrating BGS’ achievements throughout the past 10-years, whilst commemorating BHS and DAHS impressive 140-year heritage. It has been a creative rollercoaster; from weekly throwback quizzes, to alumnae parent coffee mornings, House Kahoot quizzes, arranging games on the lawn, creating archive displays and a time capsule in the iCreate space, and yet more daily quizzes! It has been so much fun.

“To kick off the week we opened our iCreate Time Capsule room, filled with a multitude of heritage pieces including; BHS Aquila’s, DAHS Reflection Books, old school uniforms, photographs, sporting equipment, House badges and more. I even managed to find myself in the final copy of the BHS Aquila magazine.

“Our iCreate space also contained video and microphone equipment, enabling students and teachers to record their personal reflections of the school, as well as giving students the chance to scribe their 10-year prediction for BGS and place them within a bespoke time capsule designed and made by our Art teacher Mrs Smith.

“Across the week we launched daily quizzes, testing our students and teacher’s knowledge on all things BGS, DAHS, and BHS, across areas such as clothing, food, and music. On average we have had 456 participants per quiz, with over 65% accuracy! This is brilliant.

“Our House Heritage Dress-up Day on Thursday topped it all off. The Greens Kitchen turned into a 50s Diner, offering a themed throwback lunch; whilst out on the lawn students and teachers played our favourite throwback' childhood games, as they sang and danced to some of the biggest hits from across the decades.

“I can only thank the BGS community for generously getting involved within all aspects of the week, and I look forward to creating more fun for our upcoming Culture Festival on the 2nd July.”
