Senior School English

Lizzie Small and Anaya Kirtane (Year 8)

On Friday the 1st of July, Year 8 visited Stratford Upon Avon, to celebrate the life of Shakespeare, as we have been studying some of his plays during our English lessons. The day consisted of a canal trip, a tour around the town and a visit to his school to experience traditional Tudor lessons and to understand the changes in England during the Elizabethan age.

The day was informative and the tour guides were very helpful and answered any questions with ease, and it was also enjoyable as we were able to explore the town and learn more about the distinctive upbringing of Shakespeare. Furthermore, it was a pleasure to see how this historical location managed to celebrate Shakespeare’s success, with many statues, buildings and landmarks demonstrating how influential he is after his lifetime. Some students described it as ‘a walk into the past’ and ‘extraordinary’!

Hayley, a year 8 student, wrote her thoughts and comments on the trip: “I think this trip was a great opportunity and it was really fun to spend a day in Stratford to learn about Shakespeare and his life” – while Lana, year 8 went on to say that she had “A very interesting, fascinating and enjoyable time”.

Overall, the day was a great experience and provided everyone with the opportunity to understand where the heart of Shakespeare’s famous plays came from. We are very grateful to all of the pupils for working together so well and a big thank you to all the staff who arranged the trip and assisted us on the day by means of travel, activities and supervision. Seren and Amelia year 8 said: “I am really grateful to the teachers for organising this, and I would definitely recommend this trip.”
