Whole School The Bridge Careers Service

At BGS we are always preparing our students to be future ready and last week saw the return of Work the Room for our Upper Sixth students.

The two-part workshop focused on learning confident and effective networking skills for the wider world, the importance of making the right impression, securing business relationships and building networks.

Initially, the students attended a workshop led by Mrs Whitlock (Head of Careers), herself a professional executive coach, learning important skills to put into practice. The second part of the evening involved a drinks reception comprising invited members of our alumnae and parent community, representing a number of interesting careers from Law to the Civil Service, Motorsport Engineering to Construction, Accountancy to newly graduated.  It was at this point that the students then honed the skills they had learnt by chatting to all of the guests, finding out about them and their work, by ‘working the room’. It was quite daunting for some of the students initially, but they quickly warmed up as the guests put them at ease and answered their many questions.

Emily Lawson (Upper Sixth) said: “It was a great evening and I will take a lot away from it. It was nice to meet so many people that took different career paths to get to where they are.”

Going forward this event will revert to its usual spot in the calendar, taking place again in the summer term for our Lower Sixth students. The event will be held on Thursday 8th June 2023 (6.00-7.00pm) and again we would be delighted for any of parents to be involved with the event. It is a super way to sample Sixth Form life at BGS and those who attend find it very rewarding. If you would like to attend please email Emma MacKenzie in the Alumnae Office, [email protected].
