Sixth Form Art & Textiles

By Mrs Smith (Art and Textiles Teacher)

On Tuesday, our Year 11 and Sixth Form Art students explored modern and contemporary art from around the world at the Tate Modern in London.

The Tate Modern has over a hundred years of art, from modernism in the early 1900s, to exciting works created today. This includes paintings, sculptures, and more made by artists all over the world ranging from works by Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

This trip was a great opportunity for students studying art to see artworks first hand; to appreciate their scale, medium used and texture. During the trip, the aspiring artists collected imagery and information on several pieces that they could use to help them develop their own themes within their work.

A highlight for all was a poignant commission piece in the Turbine Hall by Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña. Titled Brain Forest Quipu, the multi-part installation is made up of sculpture, sound, music and video.

In the next few weeks, the students will be able to integrate some of the research they collected on the day into their sketchbooks.

Stephanie West (Upper Sixth) said: “There was a wide range of works from different artists from a diverse range of cultures which was really interesting.”
