Debaters Take Regional Stage

A huge well done to our Lower Sixth debaters who were a massive credit to BGS at the European Youth Parliament (EYP) East Anglia Forum on Thursday 23rd February.

Held at Churchill College, Cambridge they debated with students across the region covering key issues affecting the UK and Europe, topics included mental health issues, human rights, and the severe shortage of digital skills amongst the adult population to name a few.

BGS opened the debate on What measures should be taken to tackle the energy crisis?, writing a speech to support the prepared resolution, as well as writing a closing speech at the end of the debate.

BGS debater, Amy Sturt (Lower Sixth), reflected on her experience: “I had an amazing time attending the Regional EYP East Anglia Forum in Cambridge last week. I only joined MUN Club in September and so attending this event was a new experience which has helped to develop my debating skills. As a school we were assigned the ECON committee, for which we presented a proposing speech on our topic - the current energy crisis. We also debated and opposed resolutions other committees had proposed on various topics, such as mental health, needle spiking and the digital divide. Each round of debate pushed me to think on my feet, as we formed direct responses and raised new points as a team.

“I really enjoyed the day as a whole, being given the opportunity to interact with other schools and gain informative tips and advice from people attending Cambridge university. I would love to take part in this again as I found it to be a great environment for learning how these events work, allowing me to progress and improve towards future debates.”

Sophia Knight (Lower Sixth) added “‘I had to give a speech as an opposing committee which was slightly nerve racking as I had to think on my feet. However, once I got into the flow of it I was really enjoying it, and starting off the day by speaking really built my confidence.”
