Sixth Form History

By Mrs O’Cleirigh (History teacher)

On Wednesday 29th November, Professor Cathy Shrank of the University of Sheffield gave an online lecture to the Sixth Form historians on Elizabethan culture, which is featured as a topic on the A Level syllabus. She discussed the cultural developments and how these created a sense of national identity. Having the opportunity to hear the insights of an expert in the field was a very welcome addition to classroom study.

Sophia Osborne (Upper Sixth) said: “The lecture was informative and provided a great insight into how education led to cultural developments under Elizabeth I. The talk was engaging, and the material covered will prove very useful to aid our A Level Study.”

Alexa Reid (Upper Sixth) added: “The lecture on Elizabethan culture was really insightful into how the state used literacy to spread propaganda about religious ideology and the monarch. Additionally, the lecture aided our learning outside of our history A Level specification, putting ideas and themes taught in class into context about humanist learning in early modern history.”
