Last Friday afternoon (17th May), Year 6 had an engaging experience at the A-Life Drug and Alcohol Workshop. This workshop aimed to educate our girls about the dangers and consequences of drug and alcohol use in an interactive and memorable way. The session was packed with activities designed to simulate the effects of substance abuse and to promote healthy, informed choices.
One of the standout activities was wearing the double vision goggles. These special goggles mimic the disorienting effects of being drunk, allowing the girls to experience firsthand the challenges of impaired vision and coordination. Laughter filled the room as they attempted simple tasks, only to find them surprisingly difficult. This activity highlighted the potential dangers of alcohol consumption and its impact on our ability to function normally.
Another popular activity was the lucky dip jelly beans. The girls took turns picking jelly beans, which could either taste delicious or disgusting, simulating the unpredictability and risks associated with taking drugs. The anticipation and surprise added a fun element to the lesson while reinforcing the serious message that drug use can lead to unpredictable and harmful outcomes.
Additionally, the girls used iPads to scan t-shirts, revealing images of healthy and unhealthy lungs. This visual demonstration starkly contrasted the effects of smoking and drug use on our respiratory system. It was a powerful reminder of the long-term health consequences of these harmful habits.
The workshop wasn't just a lesson; it was an enlightening experience that gave Year 6 the knowledge to make healthier choices.
