This year has been fantastic for our star footballers Maddy Apps (5R), Elsie Cook (5B) and Bella Maslin (5W), who have excelled on the football field for their team, Woburn and Wavendon Lionesses U10s. The footballers reflected on their successful season:

“This year, we have all been playing for Woburn and Wavendon Lionesses U10s and had lots of tournament wins. Overall, we love playing for our team because the players are so talented, but also so kind and supportive through every high and low. In the future, we hope to accomplish more victories, titles, and tournament success, and to inspire more girls to believe that we can do anything and that we have rights equal to men in sports.

“Our first summer tournament as a trio was the Flitwick Eagles Football Tournament, where we won a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final, leading us to the final against Bury, which we won 1-0! Our next tournament was Mortenville Juniors, where we played all eight teams in the group and didn’t lose a game! In the final, we played against Flitwick Eagles and won 4-0 in a golden goal, with Bella scoring the winning goal, so we won this tournament too. At the next tournament in Aylesbury, we were knocked out in the semi-final on penalties and, although it was upsetting, it was a great learning experience.

“A week later, we had our Oxford tournament and, after many tough games, we won the final 1-0. In the U10s McDonald’s Cup, we topped our group and automatically qualified for the final but, sadly, we lost, but we still came second in the best group. The next day was the U11 iD Medical Cup. In this, we didn’t lose a game and topped our group, so we qualified for the final and won 3-0! Our favourite moment of both these tournaments was meeting Leah Williamson’s family. Leah wanted to support this annual tournament as it’s the only all-girls tournament being played this summer. Unfortunately, she couldn’t attend in person.”

Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5) said: “It has been wonderful to hear of the girls’ successes on the pitch and their dedication to the sport and their team. It's Important we always celebrate success outside of school.  We wish them well for their upcoming matches!”
