By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3)
This term, Year 3 have been exploring our Unit of Inquiry: Cultural Stories and Nature Shape Creative Expression. Through this fascinating topic, the children have been learning about the relationship between the Earth and the Sun, discovering how the Earth's orbit creates the seasons, while celebrating cultural traditions such as Diwali and the Winter Solstice.
We were delighted to welcome a number of visitors who shared their knowledge and experiences with us. Mrs Fryer, a Year 5 parent, gave a fascinating talk on the Winter Solstice, drawing on her personal experiences of Paganism and its connection to nature’s rhythms. Her insights complemented our study of seasonal cycles perfectly. Mrs Kaur and a group of Sixth Form students introduced the children to the traditions and significance of Diwali through an engaging presentation, bringing this light-filled festival to life.
The children also enjoyed a visit from storyteller Chris Holland, who shared seasonal tales inspired by nature. His stories sparked imaginations and led to a creative clay modelling activity where the children retold the stories through art. This hands-on project deepened their understanding of the seasons while encouraging self-expression through words and visuals.
These rich experiences have blended science, art, and cultural storytelling, creating a memorable and creative learning journey for Year 3.
We are very grateful to our visitors for helping to make this such a special term.
