By Mrs Whomsley (Eco Coordinator)
A huge thank you to all our staff and students who took part in our Cut Your Carbon campaign throughout February. Students from Years 3 to Upper Sixth made pledges to reduce their carbon footprint, including choosing active travel, going plant-based once a week, reducing heating use, and switching off non-essential devices. Collectively, our efforts made a real impact and translated into some interesting carbon-saving statistics, including:
- Equivalent to driving 4,531 miles in an average petrol car – that's like driving from London to Cairo and back!
- Enough energy to charge 153,000 smartphones or run a laptop non-stop for 4.5 years
- Like filling 64,000 party balloons with CO₂
- The same carbon savings as keeping all the school’s iPads charged for over a year.
Every small action adds up and we are proud of our school community for taking meaningful steps towards sustainability. We will be running the event next year too and we are hopeful for even further improvements in our carbon-saving efforts.
We are also delighted to introduce our brand-new Eco Council, a first for BGS. This council, made up of representatives from Years 3 to Upper Sixth alongside staff members, will meet each half term to champion sustainability initiatives and drive real change within our school. Running alongside our existing Eco Club, the council will give pupils a voice in shaping our sustainable future.
