We are thrilled to announce that Mia Krnic (Lower Sixth) placed first in the Politics and International Relations category of Northeastern University London’s Essay Competition.
With over 5,000 submissions across the various categories, this was an outstanding achievement for Mia who chose to answer the following question: What would have to change about ‘democracy’ in order to restore faith in democracy among young people?
Mia commented: “My essay focused on innovative solutions to the current problem of youth disengagement in voting, whilst taking into account factors such as the notion of institutionalised classism and racism. My main point was that the birth of progress, be it politically, or simply wholly for society in the UK, lies in the hands of our education system.
“I examined how the curricula of other UK nations may be more effective via placing more emphasis on political literacy in their education. I also researched the impact of social media on young opinions, age and racial diversity in Parliament, and the high youth engagement in the Scottish Independence Referendum and drew parallels between it and the English voting system.”
Following her exciting news, Mia along with the other winners and finalists recently attended a celebratory event Northeastern University campus in St. Katharine Docks. The event was a great occasion which included engaging subject specific advice by staff and ambassadors.
