The focus for the GLG this year is Unite and Empower, they tasked the Year 10 pupils with the challenge of creating a business idea, whether a service, charity or product, which would Unite and Empower women and communities. They were asked to present their idea to a group of alumnae judges (pictured left to right - Sophie Wright 2015, Phoebe Dolan 2015, Emily de Groot 1999 and Rebecca Dover 2008) each with a specialism in marketing or advertising.
The preparation for the presentations took place in tutor time during the first six weeks of term and five groups took part in the final on Monday evening.
The girls had produced innovative, creative and forward-thinking ideas, which ranged from an inclusive Colour Run project to support Stonewall to an atmospheric Water Condenser, which could be cheaply and sustainably made to provide water in areas of low supply. The winning group ‘Code Red’ created a product to empower young women, producing a prototype of a subtle method to disguise sanitary products, the proceeds of which would contribute towards The Kings Arms Project to support their work on the Homeless Period.
Deputy Head Girl, Michelle-Linda Cudjoe, adds: "For the past six weeks we have been working with the Year 10 pupils, creating a product or service with the aim of empowering women. This has been a really good way to both promote our campaign and also get to know and work with other year groups. The winners, CODE RED, were really deserving."
The judges were incredibly impressed with the professionalism of the presentations, commenting that the quality was higher than many had experienced in their places of work.
Sarah-Jane Fishwick, a member of the winning team commented: “The project helped to unite the year group, especially in our video which included contributions from lots of students. It also gave me a good understanding of business and finance and helped us all to think in original and creative ways. the experience was thought-provoking and interesting.”
