Miss Huckle (Head Rowing Coach)

Having missed two Bedford Regatta events, there was much anticipation for Saturday 7th May and the return of the regatta in 2022!

BGS had 74 rowers competing across the day in 10 different racing categories. We began the day with some good close racing, progressing through to a number of quarter and semi-finals. At 1.00pm, our first VIII took to the water, and they certainly led the charge! With a fantastic win over Latymer Upper School, they progressed to the final of the Senior Womens VIII’s event. The First VIII were closely followed by the Year 10 VIII, Senior quad, Senior four and Year 9 quad who also had victories over Putney High School, Star Club, BMS and Kings School Ely for some fantastic racing over the lunchtime period.

Over the course of the day BGS rowers progressed to seven finals from the ten events entered. These results were an absolutely fantastic display of the progress that the Boat Club is making, the hard work the students put in on a daily basis. It certainly makes all of those 6.00am alarms worth it! It was incredible to hear the sound of the ‘BGS roar’ from the bank as we raced down the course on home water.

Lastly, a huge thank you to our steady stream of visitors throughout the day who came along and cheered on our rowers whilst enjoying the delicious refreshments on offer. Our whole school community was truly represented – from alumnae, to new and current families, to BGS staff and our Headmistress, as well as a lovely collection of BGS dogs who got very excited at the exuberant cheering.

We now enter our final preparations for the National Schools Regatta, held at Olympic rowing venue, Dorney Lake on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th May 2022.
