Drama and Dance

Mrs Howe (Director of Drama and Dance)

The Drama Department can honestly say we have never missed being in the Drama Studio more and are longing to return to the exhilarating process of shared connection and imaginative play, which is vital to students’ emotional and cognitive growth.

However, as Psychologist and Professor Paul T. P. Wong says: “Adversity is an opportunity for creativity - it forces one to dig deeper and discover something new about oneself.” And I have continued to be so impressed by our students committed and resolute approach to finding ways to remain creative during the more theoretical study of Drama required by the lockdown, and for continuing to bring their performances and designs to life in ever more inventive ways.

Remote classes have included Year 7 producing a Kabuki Zen tea ceremony and make-up design for a key character; Year 8 designing a puppet for His Dark Materials and Year 10 finding innovative ways to bring revisions task to life. Year 11 have also been developing vital inquiry-based skills through adapting a short story to the stage from the Director’s and Producer’s point of view.

We now look forward to this term’s unit of work where Years 7-9 will be producing their own Radio Plays with the hopes that we may be able to broadcast the most engaging to the school community.
