Last week marked the eagerly-awaited announcement of the Poetry By Heart 2021 Competition Finalists.  Schools from every county in England registered to take part in the Competition this year, with over 500 entries submitted. Mrs Everitt (Acting Head of English) and I waited with bated breath to find out if any of our wonderful Bedford Girls’ School entrants had caught the judges’ eye - or, indeed, ear.

We didn’t have to wait long for the results of the Classic Competition to be revealed and I am thrilled to announce that two of the three BGS entries have successfully been awarded places in this year’s final.

Huge congratulations go to Mahdiyah Meghji (Year 7), who is one of ten national finalists for Key Stage Three, and to Durotimi Bey (Year 10), who is a Key Stage Four finalist. An honourable mention goes to Grace Gaffey (Year 12), who narrowly missed out on one of the Key Stage Five spots.

All three students will receive individual feedback on their performances from the Poetry By Heart team, as well as a certificate acknowledging their achievement. The finalists will be invited to attend the national showcase event, set to take place at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on Monday 19th July 2021.

Well done again our BGS entrants, and we wish Mahdiyah and Durotimi all the very best for the national competition in July.
