Last week, audiences were treated to breath-taking and beautiful performances of Mermaid by Polly Teale in the intimate Studio Theatre. ‘Beneath the ocean’s waves there is no death or pain or separation. Above, the modern world is beset with war, poverty and desire’. Mermaid explores the lengths someone will go to, to change their future for love and happiness but always reminding to question is it really worth changing yourself for someone else?

Annabelle Hine (Year 9) who played Katie Baxter said: “Mermaid was such an amazing experience for me, it allowed me to work with new people, and a large group. It was also a lot of fun, working with all the costumes and an amazing set. I’m very pleased I decided to put myself forward for this opportunity, and I look forward to doing more like this in the future.”

Leyla Nurettin (Year 9) who played the Sailor, adds: “Mermaid was one experience I can take away and tell many friends and family I am proud of. I have learned to be myself around the cast, my friends, have a laugh as well as being passionate about acting. I had a great time and I hope to do it again soon...”

Miss Elsom (Technical Director), said: “Creating both a world above and below the water is no easy feat from a lighting perspective let alone a performance one. The girls threw themselves into creating these two worlds, showing the contrast between the two. Their sensitivity with the plays themes translated wonderfully to the audience and the cast as a whole really came together to create a beautifully moving piece of theatre. Their movement sequences allowed for exciting lighting to highlight those moments of performers throwing themselves off the staging into the depths below.”

Mrs Lang (Drama Teacher) who directed the production, said: “Mermaid was a challenging production, especially for such a young cast. The girls have made me prouder than I can express, not just because of the mature and sensitive performances they gave, but also because of commitment and the support they showed to each other throughout the process. Some of these girls had little or no performance experience before the production, they have demonstrated a real understanding of what it means to be part of ensemble - to work hard, and work together at all times.

“The beautiful production was a testament to the vision and talent of our Theatre Designer, Miss Middleton, and Technical Director, Miss Elsom. Together they created three different aesthetics - the distorted teenage bedroom, complete with an oversized wardrobe door, the beautiful blue-grey world of the ocean, and a bright and colourful fairy tale world. Intelligent lighting and sound design helped the audience navigate the rapid transitions between those different worlds.”
