Last fortnight 26 codebreakers in Year 8 challenged themselves in the annual CyberFirst Girls Competition.

Organised by the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ, the competition aims to provide a fun but challenging environment to encourage and inspire the next generation of young women to consider computer science as an option with a view to a future career in cyber security.

Many congratulations to the winning team at BGS, Crypting Coders, which comprised of Eva Ng, Kaila Hill, Licia Cacioppo and Sarah Pepper. As one of the top teams in the region, they now go forward to the semi-final on Saturday February 8th to compete against four other schools for a place in the national finals.

Ms Davies, Computer Science Teacher, adds: “It was excellent to see the determination and dedication of those who took part in this year's competition at BGS. The girls found every second they could to work on the puzzles at school and at home. They have been incredibly resourceful and tenacious in their pursuit. All participants can now apply for a free place on a course run by NCSC around the country. This is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.”

The ten-day competition which ended last Wednesday saw the closest scores yet at BGS as the top teams raced to crack the challenges. Find out more about the competition here.
