Wednesday saw the whole of the Lower Sixth off timetable for the afternoon to learn more about their Higher Education (HE) choices once they complete Sixth Form. This was followed in the evening with Lower Sixth parents getting together to hear more about how to support their daughter through the HE application process.
Some students opted to learn more about taking a gap year, with BGS alumna Tor Caldwell, who is a representative from Club Europe, a company that has been organising wonderful group tours for more than 35 years. Currently specialising mainly in managing school ski tours, Tor gave an insightful presentation about the many benefits of taking a gap year. The key message was that a well-planned gap year could really enhance any future applications in addition to being a life-changing experience.
Another option was to learn more about Oxbridge from a representative from the University of Cambridge. The University of Salford ran two workshops on the benefits of studying in the north and student life. Lancaster University gave detailed information on how to write a strong personal statement and how to manage your student finances.
Mrs Whitlock (Head of The Bridge Careers Service) said: “It was great to see such a high level of engagement amongst the Lower Sixth students during the afternoon. The speakers were impressed with the kinds of questions being asked, and how the girls are approaching planning life after BGS. We are all looking forward to seeing how those plans develop over the coming months. All girls can arrange an appointment with me to talk through their next steps whenever suits.”
