This week, each member of our school community had the opportunity to vote on our new school charity from Summer 2021 to Spring 2022. As the Service team, we shortlisted three charities - Smiley Club, Bedford Women's Centre and Friends For Life - that corresponded with the new Girls’ Leadership Group (GLG) campaign and reflected our school values. Each of these charities makes a significant difference in the lives of the people of Bedford.

It is of utmost importance that we hear the voices of our Bedford Girls' School community when choosing our charity. Through this, we unite our school community behind a shared purpose to support a charity that resonates with us all. As well as this, a renewed sense of enthusiasm and shared responsibility for a charity will encourage everyone to engage with it, or the social issue it tackles. We would like to encourage the school community, on a personal level, to follow the examples of our service team through individual acts of service for our charity.

As Service Captain, I am excited to see the positive impact we will have through our support of the new charity and hope to see our whole community participating in the exciting events we have planned.

Joanna Solomon said: “In involving every student in the decision, our choice will reflect what we care about most, and how we want to change our wider community for the better. If everyone supports the charity, we have the opportunity to go so far and make a massive difference.”

Lucie Bridgman said: “Charities are an integral part of the community, so community support is the most important thing we can do to give back. Spreading the word about different charities means that people from a wider range of our communities can get the help they truly need.”

Katie Bradley said: “Charitable efforts are a brilliant way for community voices to be recognised and allow us to speak out against issues we feel strongly. As a school, being aware of our position locally and using it to help those in the community is essential.”

Finally, we look forward to announcing the new school charity on Monday to the BGS Community.
