On Monday 3rd February, staff and students united for the 13th annual World Hijab Day, which was founded by Nazma Khan on 1st February 2013 as a way to recognise all Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab.
The wearing of the hijab is often a very personal decision, for many, it gives a sense of community and spiritual identity. However, it is also used as a form of oppression in some countries. World Hijab Day sets out to challenge misconceptions, demystify the myths and stand in solidarity with Muslim women in communities around the world.
This year’s theme, Hijabis Unsilenced, focused on amplifying the voices of hijab-wearing women. It celebrated their strength and resilience in the face of stereotypes and prejudice, highlighting the hijab as a symbol of empowerment, identity and solidarity.
At lunchtime, the Diversity and Inclusion team and South Asian Society invited students and staff to explore different styles of headscarves, take part in discussions and ask questions. There was also an opportunity to write positive messages on each House Hijab.
Staff and students reflected about this year’s event here.
