By Mrs Reeves (Director of Rowing)
The Bank Holiday weekend was a busy time for BGS Rowing on the London 2012 Olympic course, Dorney Lake. Some of our senior boats attended the highly competitive Wallingford Regatta on Sunday, and our J14s and J15s gained some invaluable race experience at Junior Sculling Regatta on Monday.
The first races of the season are always filled with both excitement and trepidation, but our BGS crews stepped up to the challenge!
Racing against the best girls crews in the country, our senior crews put together some solid race profiles proving themselves to be significantly more competitive than in previous years. Our First IV had a particularly exciting race, overtaking Shrewsbury School in the last 500m to finish in the top 10 crews in the event.
Moving to Monday, our J14 and J15 crews again put in competitive rows for our first regattas of the season. Our J14 octo competed in their first side by side race ever on a huge stage, and again put in a strong performance to finish in the top 10 crews in their event.
We now look forward to one of our favourite days of the year this weekend where all rowers in the whole Boat Club will compete on home water at Bedford Regatta on Saturday 11th May. The first BGS race is at 8.30am, with our last at 7.20pm, and a steady flow of races throughout the day. We look forward to welcoming lots of the BGS community to the riverbank.
